W: Could you turn the music down, please?I know this is my favorite song but I have a pain in my head today.
M: Yes,of course. And I'm also concerned that the neighbors may complain about the noise.
M: Will you be going to the concert in Manchester next Sunday,Jane?
W: That was the plan, but I've called several hotels and all the rooms seem to be taken.
M: Try the Midland Hotel. They usually have rooms to spare and the hotel is next door to the concert hall.
M: A parcel came for you today. The postman left it in the garage. It's very heavy.I've brought it into the kitchen.
W: That'll be the bed sheets I ordered.Could you carry it up to the bedroom for me?
W: This seems like a long journey. We have been driving for 20 miles and that sign says the city is still 10 miles away.
M: It is if you go in that direction — but I know a short cut.It is really only half that distance away.
M: Would you like another drink?
W: I don't think we have time,do we?We should get back to the office.
M: I suppose so.My sister was supposed to meet us here 40 minutes ago,but it doesn't look like she's coming.
W: I have a difficult decision to make.I've been invited to go on a six-month trip to Indonesia, but I've just been offered a job with an insurance company.
M: Go on the trip to Indonesia. It will be amazing. It's the obvious choice.
W: But I'm not like you.Traveling around the world isn't important to me.I enjoy staying at home.Still,it's a tough decision.
M: I really would think very carefully about this.Travel is good for your mind and far more exciting than staying in this little town.A lot of people don't get chances like the one you've been given.
W: I'm having a difficult time writing this essay. How is yours going?
M: I have almost finished it.Have you tried using the hamburger style?
W: I'm talking about homework. Now you've got me thinking about dinner.
M: Don't think of it like that;think of it as a way to build an essay. You have the bread that holds the meat, toppings, and sauce, right? The bread is your first and last paragraphs, the introduction and conclusion. They hold the essay together. The paragraphs in between are what is in the burger.
W: Oh, I get it now. My main idea is the meat. And all the details are like the lettuce, tomato, cheese, and whatever else you want on there.
M: You got it.Go a little further and think of the sauce as your writing style.Good writing, like good sauce, adds flavor.
M: Hey Jane,I noticed you never seem to be concerned about any tests. You never seem to be stressed about anything. Is it true? How do you do it?
W: Well, I wouldn't say I am not concerned.I would say it is that I don't worry.I plan and prepare, and then I find I do not need to worry.Worry is a waste of energy for me.Worry is all about things that do not exist. I mean those things could happen, but if you plan well, you make sure those things are unlikely to happen.
M: How are you so sure that your plans will work?
W: It's not that I am sure.It is just that I feel confident enough.I write a diary every day of daily events and things I learned that day.I review that every so often, and it helps keep me calm about so many things.I have found out that most things that people are worried about never happen.
W: Everyone seems to be talking about 5G these days. What is it?
M: It's the latest type of mobile technology.
W: I'm tired of people trying to sell me new phones. The one I have is fine.
M: I'm no expert, but I think there is more to 5G than selling phones.
W: Like what?
M: It will be a lot faster and will pave the way for advances in technology — cars that drive themselves, that sort of thing.
W: We'll have to be on 10 or 20G before I travel in one of those.
M: Yes.It's a scary thought, isn't it?But not as scary as remote surgery. That's another thing that 5G could enable.
W: What does that involve?
M: Well,a surgeon could perform an operation by remote control from another room, another town — even another country.
W: Why would he want to do that?
M: Well, just think.A top surgeon in a big city could perform an operation in a remote village.
W: If I were the patient,I would worry about a power reduction.
M: It's a power cut I would be most worried about.
W: I always think that variety is an important part of life. Some people like to go through life playing safely, doing things they are familiar with and never leaving their comfort zone. Some like to take holidays on cruise ships. They sail to different countries where they get out for a short time to look around, and then go back to their familiar surroundings on the ship. I would hate that. When I go to another country I want to live with the people, talk to them and deal with them.I don't want a guided tour. I want to explore.I like countries that are different, not familiar. That isn't to say I would go anywhere dangerous. I may like adventure but I'm not foolish.Sometimes I think I would like to live permanently in another country. My own country is cold and dark in winter and it would be nice to live somewhere warmer. But then I think about variety again.Winter may be bad, but spring and summer are beautiful here. Best of all is autumn, when the leaves turn lovely golden brown. A warmer place would be nice but, for now, I'll tolerate my cold and wet home.
